Omnitron in the News

Light Reading Ethernet Expo – New York, November 8Omnitron Systems, a provider of Carrier Ethernet optical connectivity solutions, today announced that iConverter® Network Interface Devices are the first NIDs on the market to support the new ITU-T Y.1564 Ethernet service activation testing standard. Both the iConverter GM4 NID and the HybridNIDTM support the Y.1564 standard, which provides mechanisms that rapidly verify the service configuration and performance of Ethernet services.

Ethernet business services, mobile backhaul and wholesale services can deliver several applications, including voice, video and business-critical data. These applications require Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and Y.1564 provides the methodologies to quickly test Ethernet services. Y.1564 is the only standardized methodology for validating of Ethernet Service Level Agreements (SLAs) in a single test and provides validation with the highest level of accuracy.

Many Carrier Ethernet equipment vendors have integrated RFC 2544 for testing Ethernet services. The Internet Engineering Task Force created RFC 2544 in 1999, but it was designed for testing new network equipment, not Ethernet services with multiple Classes of Service. RFC 2544 does not specify how to measure delay variation (jitter), so some vendors have implemented proprietary and non-standard mechanisms to overcome these limitations. Each RFC 2544 test is performed independently and in a serial process, so testing can take hours.

iConverter NIDs can be remotely controlled to initiate and perform Y.1564 testing, and can run multiple test flows simultaneously.  For example, when turning up multiple services with multiple flows, Y.1564 can ensure that internet access does not affect voice traffic. Service Providers who deploy iConverter NIDs can speed time to market and reduce operating costs by turning up services with fewer truck rolls and having less test equipment in the field.
