The iConverter 4Tx VT 10/100 managed Ethernet switch module is a member of the iConverter product family. It provides a compact 4-Port 10/100 Ethernet switch that is expandable across the iConverter 19-Module, 5-Module and 2-Module chassis backplanes, as well as being supported as a stand-alone switch with the iConverter 1-Module Chassis.

The iConverter 4Tx VT is a compact 4-Port Ethernet switch module and is a member of the managed iConverter product family. The 4Tx VT is a versatile plug-in switch module that can be deployed in a 19-Module, 5-Module, 2-Module and in a 1-Module Chassis. 

The iConverter 4Tx VT complies to IEEE 802.1Q and 802.1p standards. It supports the 802.1Q VLAN packet tagging and untagging for segregating data in Enterprise networks, and enabling secure separation of Service Provider network management and customer data to improve security and intrusion protection.

The 802.1Q Q-in-Q stacked tags enable Service Providers to offer to their customers secure Ethernet Virtual Private Line services which isolates each customer’s data traffic, as well as the Service Provider’s management traffic. 

The 4Tx VT supports the 802.1p prioritization for the delivery of Quality of Service (QoS) to real-time applications such as voice or video over Ethernet.

The iConverter 4Tx VT features Bandwidth and Port Access Controls. On a per port basis, the upstream and downstream traffic can be independently controlled by selecting from eight levels of bandwidth setting. The Port Access Control enables the network administrator to easily control and deny individual port access while maintaining port configuration for easy port re-enabling.

The 4Tx VT supports Half or Full-duplex 10/100Mbps auto-negotiation, and features flexible hardware and software controls. Two ports can be controlled by DIP-switches and all four ports can be controlled via SNMP management. The 4Tx VT supports auto-crossover (MDI/MDI-X) on all four ports, eliminating the need for a crossover cable and facilitating connectivity to different types of Ethernet equipment.

The iConverter 4Tx VT supports reporting of MIB statistics. 38 different variables are available on each RJ-45 port, reporting a wide range of real-time packet statistics such as performance and operational status indicators.


The iConverter 4Tx VT can be used in managed or unmanaged applications. Management provides remote configuration, monitoring and trap notification. Management is accomplished by installing an iConverter Management Module (NMM2) or Network Interface Device (NID) in the same chassis.

The Management Module can be accessed via SNMP, Telnet, and serial port. The 4Tx VT can be managed with Omnitron’s intuitive, graphic-oriented NetOutlook SNMP Management Software or third party SNMP management software. Management via the Telnet and the serial interfaces have an easy-to-use, menu-driven interface.

The management software can override the physical DIPswitch settings such as auto-negotiation, Half or Full-Duplex, and backplane selection, and remotely configure additional parameters including rate-limiting, VLAN and Port Access Control. Some of the real-time 4Tx VT parameters that can be monitored include duplex mode (Half, Full), link and data activity status. Other parameters include module type and model, hardware and software revisions, serial numbers and a user-defined identifier. The port MIB statistics include transmit and receive packet counts and error counts.

The iConverter 4Tx VT supports SNMP trap notification for the monitoring and notification of different network events. Specific events that generate traps include module insertion and removal, and port link-up and link-down. Trap monitoring of specific events can be selectively enabled or disabled by the network management software.

Compact Switch Configurations

iConverter compact chassis support Ethernet backplane connectivity between plug-in modules. Modules can be combined to create configurations that provide multi-port Ethernet connectivity to end users and subscribers.

The example below illustrates a 4Tx VT module and a 10/100M2 intelligent media converter installed in a 2-Module chassis. This configuration provides a Fast Ethernet fiber uplink and five managed 10/100BASE-T ports.
