Omnitron in the News

Irvine, CA – Feb. 19, 2008Omnitron Systems Technology (www.omnitron-systems.com), a provider of fiber optic access systems for next-generation carrier Ethernet networks, today announced a set of enhancements to its iConverter® T1/E1 and T3/E3 media converters. The two media converters are carrier-grade products designed to give telco and cable operators, utilities and enterprises the flexibility to provide different services over existing fiber access infrastructure, thereby reducing costs and creating additional revenue opportunities. The iConverter portfolio of fiber media converters and network interface devices consists of modular converters and chassis that combine to provide a variety of configurations for central office and customer premises fiber deployments. In addition to T1/E1 and T3/E3, iConverters support 10/100 and Gigabit Ethernet, OC3, OC12 and serial technologies.

The enhancements to the iConverter T1/E1 and T3/E3 media converters include support for small form pluggable (SFP) transceivers, which allow the media converters to increase the bandwidth capacity of fiber access infrastructure by incorporating Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM) technology. The media converter portfolio also now includes a cost-effective stand alone version designed for easy installation, with a universal AC and DC power options.

The iConverter T1/E1 and T3/E3 media converters feature a built-in fiber tester for diagnosis of the remote unit, eliminating the cost of external hardware or support personnel at each end of a link. The converters’ SFP support enables adaptability to different fiber types and distances, providing maximum flexibility across a variety of network architectures and topologies.

“Omnitron’s improved iConverter media converters give enterprises and service providers the ability to provide a wider variety of services over their existing fiber access infrastructure,” said Doug Baar, Omnitron’s vice president of Engineering. “The new features create additional revenue opportunities without increasing service provider and enterprise capex requirements.”

Service providers frequently use SFPs to streamline the task of interfacing equipment at the central office because they standardize interconnection cabling. The same media converter part number can utilize a variety of SFPs for different wavelengths and distances, reducing costs and simplifying inventories.

The iConverter T1/E1 and T3/E3 media converters are designed for a variety of enterprise, telco and cable applications. Enterprise applications include T1 and T3 distance extension from service provider demarcation equipment. Telco and cable applications include delivery of T1 and T3 services over fiber access links that extend up to 120 kilometers. The converters are compatible with Omnitron’s NetOutlook™ SNMP management software, as well as third-party, SNMP-based management software.
