iConverter® XG Transponders
iConverter XG 10G Fiber Transponders are protocol-transparent fiber-to-fiber media converters, and are available as compact, unmanaged standalone units or managed chassis plug-in modules. The iConverter XG provides reliable and cost-effective conversion between standard and DWDM wavelengths using Omnitron’s DWDM SFP+ and XFP Transceivers.
OmniLight® LGX DWDM Multiplexers
The OmniLight family of passive optical products consists of standard LGX chassis and passive CWDM and DWDM Multiplexer modules that provide a scalable, flexible and high-density solution for distributing wavelength services.
DWDM Ring Application
Deploy Data Center DWDM Rings with Passive DWDM Multiplexers
In this data center DWDM interconnect application, OmniLight DWDM multiplexers are deployed at three different data centers to create a DWDM ring with 24 data channels. An OmniLight 14-Module LGX Chassis is installed at each location, and two groups of three 8-Channel DWDM Multiplexers are installed in each chassis for the DWDM ring uplink and downlink. OmniLight 8-Channel LGX Dual Fiber DWDM MUX/DEMUX modules support DWDM channels 28 through 35, 36 through 43 and 52 through 59 in 100GHz spacing. An expansion port is available to cascade up to three DWDM MUX/DEMUX modules, for 24 DWDM channels. DWDM transceivers are installed in the data center switch or router and connect to the corresponding wavelength Channel Ports on the DWDM multiplexers with fiber patch cables (8 patch cables are represented in the diagram with red dotted lines). Each wavelength can transport up to 10Gbps for a total of 240Gbps on the ring.
DWDM Transponder Application
Reduce the Cost of Connectivity to DWDM Multiplexers
Data centers are often connected with remote sites over a DWDM optical transport fiber rings. The challenges are the high cost of proprietary DWDM transceivers, and fiber switches connected to the ring may not support DWDM or high-power DWDM transceivers. Ultra-low latency iConverter transponders can be used to economically convert standard wavelengths to DWDM channels, and support MSA power level 4 XFP transceivers. iConverter transponders are protocol-transparent up to 11.32Gbps and compatible with Gigabit and 10G Ethernet, SONET/SDH, Fibre Channel, OTN (G.709) and CPRI options 6, 7, 7A and 8.
In this application, iConverter XG+ Transponders are installed in an iConverter 19-Module Chassis. The XG+ transponders provide DWDM wavelength conversion from the standard wavelength (850, 1310, 1550nm) SFP+ transceivers installed in the third-party 10G fiber switch. The XG+ transponders with Omnitron transceivers are much less expensive than proprietary DWDM transceivers, and do not impact the warranty or service contract on the third-party switch because they are external devices.
If the DWDM Multiplexer is an active MUX, iConverter XG+ Transponders provide wavelength conversion at a lower cost than installing proprietary DWDM transceivers in the 10G fiber switch.
If the DWDM Multiplexer is a passive MUX, iConverter XG+ Transponders and chassis provide the necessary power and cooling for high power (Power level 3 and 4) transceivers that provide advanced Forward Error Correction (FEC) to insure error free transmission over long distances.
iConverter XG+ Transponders also support tunable XFPs with the iConverter management system. Tunable XFP transceivers are configurable to support a specific channel in a DWDM optical network. Tunable XFPs allow network operators to remotely change wavelengths (channel paths) when they need to redistribute bandwidth, or reconfigure/upgrade traffic patterns and services.
By deploying iConverter XG+ Transponders, the data center operator is able to economically deploy a long-haul DWDM optical transport ring, and preserve the investment in the 10G SFP+ fiber switch.
